While I have long been interested in spending time naked, and have slept naked since the age of 12, it wasn’t until 2011 that I finally decided to identify as a nudist.
I don't use a towel to protect myself from anything. (Well, maybe from sand. Or biting ground insects.) The towel is there to provide comfort on hard, rough, and nonabsorbent surfaces. It is also there to protect upholstery from my sweat and skin oil.
Some people may need a towel because they didn't clean up adequately after the toilet or maybe have bladder issues or a skin infection.
I guess you could say it is to protect the peace of mind of other people.
I too, sit on a towel - for the same reason that, when visiting the doctor, the pharmacy or the Med Laboratories, I wear a face mask. I don't believe for a millisecond that my wearing a piece of fabric over my mouth is going to afford myself, or anybody else the slightest protection against an airborne, invisible disease, but I'm aware that many, many other people DO believe that! So rather than for protection from any disease, I wear a mask (or sit naked on a towel) solely out of respect for other people and their beliefs. Being a New Zealander, I also have never sat on a table since being made aware of Maori etiquette.
I definitely use a towel, no matter where I am. At home, I a specific stack that I cycle through, plus smaller ones for travel. Mandatory equipment from my perspective.
I think the towel is for cleanliness rather than hygiene. Take a computer keyboard, after some time they get a really grubby buildup of what can only be oil off the skin on the keys and not necessarily from dirty hands. Same would happen with bare bums on hard chairs after a while, not nice. Soft chairs would summerly get dirty looking, just as high backed chairs get dirty from oil off the hair. Towels also have a general cleaning effect on hard chairs removing dust etc and keeping them somewhat polished.
Always use a towel if your butt or genitals will come in contact with something others may come in contact with. It's so common sense that it should be done without thinking. If it's a piece of furniture that only you will sit or lay on then do what you want.
Another interesting piece, Steve. Yes - the use of a towel is more a symbolic gesture more than for any practical hygienic use. Although some may believe a towel provides an effective barrier against germs, let's face it - no woven cloth is ever going to stop microscopic organisms getting through. It would be like trying contain sand in a wire-netting basket!
So, yes, I always sit on something if visiting a club or someone's home, but out and about in the forest or river or seaside? Nah!
What I appreciate about your writing is it is always relevant, and smart and connects with the pulse of trends in the nudist world. Thank you for another good piece. And yes always use a towel it’s just the polite thing to do even in your own home.

Excellent.

very well written. In fact every naturist has to use towel at least in public places where seat sharing may be common..
I always use one out it in my house, hygienic plus I don’t like sticking to the leather seats, lol
At home we also sit on a sarong or similar and not just for our bums, more for preventing years of body oils and sweat accumulating on the couch.
I sit on a towel in summer and then only when I am in company.

Thank you for your comments.
Yes, we always set on a towel when nude, even at home. It's a no brainer for us.
